The S.S. Mauretania launched in 1906 by Cunard Line will remain in service until 1935. The four-screw liner burns 1,000 tons of coal per day and requires a "black squad" of 324 firemen and trimmers to feed her . After a fire in 1921 the Mauretania was converted to burn oil. For many years she holds the speed record (26.87 knots) across the Atlantic.
